The Strength of Multi-row Aggregation Cuts for Sign-pattern Integer Programs

چکیده
In this paper, we study the strength of aggregation cuts for sign-pattern integer programs (IPs). Sign-pattern IPs are a generalization of packing IPs and are of the form {x ∈ Z+ | Ax ≤ b} where for a given column j, Aij is either non-negative for all i or non-positive for all i. Our first result is that the aggregation closure for such sign-pattern IPs can be 2-approximated by the original 1-row closure. This generalizes a result for packing IPs from [11]. On the other hand, unlike in the case of packing IPs, we show that the multirow aggregation closure cannot be well approximated by the original multi-row closure. Therefore for these classes of integer programs general aggregated multi-row cutting planes can perform significantly better than just looking at cuts from multiple original constraints.

Aggregation-based cutting-planes for packing and covering integer programs
In this paper, we study the strength of Chvátal-Gomory (CG) cuts and more generally aggregation cuts for packing and covering integer programs (IPs). Aggregation cuts are obtained as follows: Given an IP formulation, we first generate a single implied inequality using aggregation of the original constraints, then obtain the integer hull of the set defined by this single inequality with variable...
متن کاملOn the relative strength of different generalizations of split cuts
Split cuts are among the most important and well-understood cuts for general mixed-integer programs. In this paper we consider some recent generalizations of split cuts and compare their relative strength. More precisely, we compare the elementary closures of split, cross, crooked cross and general multi-branch split cuts as well as cuts obtained from multi-row and basic relaxations. We present...
متن کاملThe strength of multi-row models
We develop a method for computing facet-defining valid inequalities for any mixed-integer set PJ . While our practical implementation does not return only facet-defining inequalities, it is able to find a separating cut whenever one exists. The separator is not comparable in speed with the specific cutting-plane generators used in branch-and-cut solvers, but it is general-purpose. We can thus u...
متن کاملOn the Practical Strength of Two-Row Tableau Cuts
Following the flurry of recent theoretical work on cutting planes from two-row mixed integer group relaxations of an LP tableau, we report on computational tests to evaluate the strength of two-row cuts based on lattice-free triangles having more than one integer point on one side. A heuristic procedure to generate such triangles (referred to in the literature as “type 2” triangles) is presente...
متن کاملMulti-row approaches to cutting plane generation
This thesis focuses on the use of cutting-plane techniques to improve general-purpose mixed-integer linear programming solvers. The first topic covered here is a fast separation method for two-row cuts. Two-row cuts are intersection cuts from two rows of a simplex tableau describing the LP relaxation of the problem. These types of cuts recently garnered a lot of attention from the scientific co...
